I can’t tell you how many times over the years I have gotten the call — ” We just got a puppy and want an organic lawn.” Upon arrival to provide a complimentary site visit, I notice swing sets, jungle gyms, soccer balls, baseballs, pool toys, etc. The first thing that pops into my head is “WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?” The children walk barefoot, pick up a ball, put their hands in their mouth, play on a lawn treated with chemical fertilizer and pesticides, and the concern is the dog? Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs and have three of my own!
Chemical fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides are all part of multi step conventional lawn programs. While it’s hard to measure risk and exposure associated with these products, they are made to break down with sunlight and rain. Once tracked into the home these products could be present for a very long time, posing an ongoing threat — to puppies AND children.
